Recommendations to improve data quality of your MRI scan

The scanners that take pictures of you are sensitive to certain cosmetic/beauty products and practices. These products and practices can lead to bad picture quality. The following are recommendations that help us take the best possible pictures. On the day of your MRI session, please:

  • Do not wear make-up or sunscreen on or near the body part being imaged (e.g., do not wear face make-up if you are coming for a brain MRI)
  • Do not arrive with wet hair (for brain MRIs)
  • Do not wash your hair with dry shampoo (for brain MRIs)
  • Do not arrive with recently dyed hair (~3 days prior; for brain MRIs)
  • Do not wear hairspray, hair wax, or hair gel (for brain MRIs)
  • Do not wear hair extensions that cannot be removed (for brain MRIs)
  • Do not wear colored contact lenses
  • Do not wear jewelry or hair pins that cannot be removed easily. The MRRC recommends removing all jewelry and hair pins at home before you come to the center so nothing gets left behind.
